The Commonwealth Academy Cougars took first place in the Middle Division of the Kingsbury Day School Basketball Invitational Tournament. The Cougars tournament play included a victory over the JV squads of Kingsbury Day School (37-12) on Friday, December 12th and the Lab School (48-26) on Saturday, December 13th. A number of individual players were also honored for their excellent play and exemplary sportsmanship. Devan Gosain ’10 received the Middle Division MVP Award, while Marcus Cox ’10 and Lawrence Hayes ’11 were selected to the Middle Division 1st Team All Tournament. Ally Leader ’09 and Chris Foley ’10 rounded out the awards for Commonwealth Academy with sportsmanship awards.

The defense led the Cougars in their impressive 37-12 win over Kingsbury, holding them to just three points in the first half of tournament play. Kingsbury scored the game’s first three points and then went scoreless until the third quarter. Lawrence Hayes ’11 led the Cougars in scoring with 14 points, ten of which came in the third quarter. The next two top scorers were Devan Gosain ’10 who had 9 points and Marcus Cox ’10 who had 7 points.

On Saturday, the Cougars squared of against the Lab School, winner of the previous days game against The Nora School. The Cougars got off to a quick lead and never looked back. By the end of the first half, the team led 29-5 shutting out their opponent in the second quarter for two days in a row. By the end of the game, Commonwealth had secured a 46-26 victory and their first tournament championship. Lawrence Hayes ’11, Devan Gosain ’10, and Marcus Cox ’10 were again the Cougars’ top three scorers, with a combined 36 points.
